Our comment from Nutrifinder.net about Kelvale Medical Group:
Kelvale Medical Group is a well-established medical practice known for its dedicated staff and caring approach to patient healthcare. Many patients commend the clinic for its friendly and helpful reception staff, often praised for their warm demeanor and efficiency.
Positive experiences are frequently reported by patients who appreciate the thoroughness and attentiveness of several doctors, such as Dr. Phuong Nguyen and Dr. Adrian Jameson, who are noted for taking the time to listen and provide meaningful consultations.
However, some reviews highlight concerns over specific doctors' lack of empathy and communication skills, particularly with mental health issues. For example, patients have expressed disappointment with Dr. Leif Thonell and Dr. Michelle Skellern regarding their attitudes and approach to sensitive health matters.
While the clinic has a loyal following, some visitors note that wait times can be extended and that there have been inconsistencies in billing practices, particularly regarding bulk billing not being available for all patients.
In summary, Kelvale Medical Group offers dedicated and compassionate healthcare, although potential patients should consider the individual doctor's approach and be prepared for possible waiting periods.
Kelvale Medical Group: Reviews
Negative experience: Dr Jameson does not appear to like seeing patients of other doctors from this clinic. We found him to be very rude, abrupt and dismissive. He outright lied when asked if he had done a certain procedure, and this in front of a student he had with him this day. We saw him a total of three times regarding a minor surgical procedure, the only time he was polite was when he had a student watching him. Not a good experience, and will definitely avoid him going forward!
Fantastic experience: Highly recommended this practice especially Dr Phuong Nguyen. He was very helpful and informative and took the time to listen and didn't just quickly see me to get me out so he could seethe next patient. The recpection staff were all very helpful & friendly it was actually nice to see them all smiling and happy. Will be highly recommending this practice to anyone looking for a great doctor.
Negative experience: I’ve seen multiple doctors at Kelvale trying to seek an understanding and empathetic doctor but yet to find one. Don’t book with Dr Leif Thonell. You can throw your health care card out the window if you have one because he doesn’t bulk bill but informs you this once you’ve arrived at the practice and in his office. I felt pressured to continue with my appointment. He specialises in men’s health and that became very very clear after he showed absolutely no sympathy or compassion towards my mental health as a woman. I’ve never been one to throw the sexist card around because everyone is equal in my eyes and that’s how it should be always be but I just experienced it first hand from Dr Thonell and it’s left me feeling broken and in disbelief. The way he communicated with me came across like he didn’t care and was just waiting to say “NEXT” On a positive note, I’ll say the reception at Kelvale are kind, very welcoming and bright.
Negative experience: I had a very disappointing experience with Dr. Michelle Skellern. I went in seeking help for my toddlers skin condition, and instead of feeling heard and understood, I was met with a condescending attitude and dismissive behavior. She seemed uninterested in my concerns and provided no meaningful solutions. I left the appointment feeling frustrated and uncertain. Thankfully, I sought a second opinion from a dermatologist, who was able to correctly diagnose the issue and offer appropriate treatment. I would not recommend this GP, as her lack of empathy and professionalism was evident throughout the visit.
Fantastic experience: Absolutely the best medical Centre I've ever been to would highly recommend the doctors are extremely caring and thorough, you will definitely be taken care of here
Negative experience: Worst experience ever.
Fantastic experience: Attended my appointment with Dr. Adrian Jameson. He was amazing. To finally meet with a Dr and discuss my wishes and actually be listened to is so refreshing. As a woman, it's very easy to be disregarded and have a medical professional think they know what's best for me better than I do, but Dr. Jameson listened and understood me. Ladies at the counter were straight to the point, and very efficient. Special thanks to Sue who checked me in. Will be back in the future as a regular patient.
Negative experience: Missus came here on a tuesday as shes been sick for a week doctor took throat swabs. She got her first results to say it was negative for viruses she never received a call back for the bacterial test. Shes worse than before had to go elsewhere as the doctor wasnt available shes no bee. perscribed antibiotics shes finally on the mend. If the tests came back negative for viruses then it must be bacterial why would you not perscribe her anti biotics then and there and to not even do what you said you would in by calling her back on friday for the last results leave her to get worse over the weekend they dont care about you just want yours and the governments money. Useless af
Negative experience: Don’t deserve any stars today. I’m one of their clients, and today I’m sick. I can’t talk, can’t walk, and I asked a simple question: 'Can you do a home visit because I’m sick?' The receptionist put me on hold, then took my details, then transferred me to a nurse, who transferred me to another person who told me they couldn’t do home visits. This call lasted 9 minutes. Such a waste of a sick person’s time.
Fantastic experience: Would like to share the wonderful Drs/treatment we receive from Kelvale, recently my husband was quite unwell and our usual Dr was unavailable, we saw Dr Thonnel who listened to all we had to say and asked so many questions as to my husbands health, he immediately organised blood tests, within 12 hours of those tests, my husband is in ICU being treated for critical sodium levels, without Dr Thonnels speedy treatment our story may not have ended so well, Thank Dr Thonnel and Kelvale, Bev Carr
Negative experience: The staff here are great but the 1 star is because of Dr Adrian Jameson. I'd been out of hospital for a couple of days with alcohol withdrawal. I went see him with the box of my old meds with the hospital label on it. I was shaking so much I had trouble filling out the paper work. I was in desperate need of help and he wouldn't help me because he didn't know me or my med history. Shame on you "Dr". I was lucky enough to find someone who had the heart and brains to help me. I'm not a junkie and felt shamed to be treated like one in such a weak state. He wouldn't even call the hospital or my counciler.
Fantastic experience: I’ve attended this clinic for several years and always had first rate medical advice.
Fantastic experience: I have always found the doctors, nurse and office staff to be considerate and caring. Have been a patient of the practice for ten years, have seen a number of doctors come and go, but always the focus has been on the patient. I would certainly recommend this practice
Negative experience: Good practice, friendly and kind staff however if you don’t want to be waiting 30+ mins for your appointment then I’d recommend going to another doctors practice. Don’t think I’ve ever had a single appointment on time.
Negative experience: Doctor Thonell is a coward, my mother had to go to him to get a rose thorn out of her foot. And instead of doing anything he told her to ‘let it fester out’ my mother has diabetes. And this rose thorn made her blood sugar spike, he made her take extra insulin and gave her antibiotics instead of taking the thorn out like he said he would. If you can’t cut a small thorn that’s causing pain out of a patients foot because you’re squeamish a too much of a prick yourself to not say you’re squeamish. You don’t deserve to be a doctor, you’re meant to be helping out. Not telling someone to allow a rose thorn to ‘fester out’ it’s in the ball of her foot, it’ll going go deeper if you don’t take it out. Moron
Negative experience: Really disappointed with dr Jane Potter. I recently attended an appointment with her regarding mental health and without any questions of previous medical history or mental health past I was written a prescription and waved out the door.
Fantastic experience: Excellent practice, great team here. I think that the number of poor reviews is more of a reflection of the socio-economic status and typical intelligence of the population in the surrounding suburbs than the actual care given by the practice itself. It seems like people expect way more than is practically achievable due to the Dunning-Kruger effect. To address one of the main complaints: The doctors here are not psychiatrists, so do not (and should not) actually initially prescribe anything for mental health related issues, they will give you a referral to a psychiatrist for that. From my own experience: Dr Sri is excellent, highly experienced and very quick to get to the bottom of things. Dr Thonell is very direct, no-nonsense, and professional, and a great doctor, but can seem a little abrupt (he does really care though). Marcelo is a great podiatrist, but can be misunderstood (which isn't his fault actually). Dr Potter is very nice and caring, but I haven't seen her enough to comment beyond that. Dr Jameson is good, though I haven't seen him enough to comment beyond that either.
Fantastic experience: Dr Thonell is one of the best GPs I have come across. He is a no non-sense, honest, straight shooter who can get to the core of the medical condition presented and provide a sound, well-considered diagnosis. He does not over-prescribe medication and his common sense approach is most refreshing. He is also a warm and generous human being. If you want a straight answer, a sound diagnosis, and an appropriate treatment, I strongly recommend that you see Dr Thonell.
Fantastic experience: Went to see Dr Christie Cameron She was super efficient, thorough and explained everything clearly. Made a visit I was nervous about really easy. Thank you!
Negative experience: Went with a sore throat, no medication given..only panadol.. sent swab to the lab, no appointment until 2 days to discuss the result or get a script. By the time I meet , my sore throat stays, I suffered for 3 days, being on sick leave . Not happy at all.
Negative experience: Came in for a medical, was told by staff multiple times what the price was for the service I was requesting, when I got to the counter they significantly increased the price with no explanation as to why as they already knew what service I required when I was quoted a price. Will never return to this clinic and would highly recommend you dont use them. Staff are rude and the manager is unreasonable.
Positive experience: I saw Dr Leif Thonnell, was v happy with the visit. One very annoying and easily fixable issue was that we had an appointment for 8.10 - early morning as we have to be at work, we waited half an hour whilst the doctor was talking to a medical rep - how about the medical reps book appointments so the patients don’t have to wait?
Negative experience: Sadly I found Dr Leif was very dismissive of my mental health when I came to him for help. I have been seeing the same doctor at another local practice for the last few years (incl during my pregnancy pre and antenatal) but since she left there I have been floating and trying to find a new gp I feel comfortable with. It’s not easy! Anyway I was told by this dr I don’t need any medical assistance with my anxiety while I transition going off medication because I don’t have job (I’m a stay at home mother and my husband works away interstate so I’d say I have my hands full and wouldn’t say that’s not a job!). when I tried to show him I have been limping due to pretty horrible pain in my feet he told me to just sit down and do nothing and that will help? I didn’t want any pain relief but more was hoping for a stronger anti inflammatory medication to help it be manageable as I’m struggling to even pick up my baby. I got the sense that this doctor didn’t want to help me at all and like I was just there to get scripts in a dodgy way? I’m not an addict. Just a tired and stressed mum trying my best. We have had okay experience with the rest of Kelvale but I feel like this experience was so bad I need to leave a review. I walked out crying as the last thing someone who is mentally struggling needs is a professional not being supportive.
Fantastic experience: Dr Amy Lee created a very comfortable environment to discuss my concerns. I felt like she made a very active effort to understand my health hollistically. I would highly recommend her, particularly if you feel like you haven't been listened to by providers elsewhere.
Negative experience: Today we went there for blood test, there were few old people also there to do the test. The staff members made us to wait almost 30 minutes, and last they told that "laboratory is not working today only those who want to visit doctor can stay". Really bad experience. They could have inform before.
Negative experience: Unable to leave zero stars. Ladies at reception very friendly and helpful, found it amusing that i was only in the dr's office a couple of minutes. Forget this place, more interested in the health of your wallet. leif thonel has to be the most arrogant, rude gp i have ever met, definitely not recommended. If you have a very fat wallet he will probably put his knee pads on.
Fantastic experience: I've just started taking my kids here and have been so happy with them espeically Dr Jameson. He is so knowledgeable and thorough. it's busy and sometimes you have to wait but that's to be expected at the moment
Negative experience: If I could give them 0stars I would.. this is the worst doctor practice I’ve ever been too… the doctors refuse my medication that I needed and had a specialist letter that I could have the medication and then refuse to do my partners medical for work.. this doctor practice is disrespectful and unprofessional…. And I will never recommend this disrespectful and unprofessional doctor practice to anyone..
Fantastic experience: Best Pathology service! Denise is an amazing phlebotomist, not only is her professionalism outstanding, her demeanour is extremely kind and caring. Won't go anywhere else.
Fantastic experience: This is an amazing place. Dr Leif Thonell is one of the best drs I have seen in my 68 years. He is patient knowledgeable and professional. He has diagnosed things for me that others have overlooked. Thank you so much Kelvale Medical Kelmscott for being here and having such amazing front of surgery staff, nurses and doctors.
Fantastic experience: Lovely place wonderful doctor Dr Amy Lee
Fantastic experience: Very pleased with the services I have received from Kelvale Medical Group. Reception have always been kind and accomodating which I imagine would be hard dealing with difficult, whining patients all day. Doctors Sri, Arshad and Skellern have all been very professional and respectful when I have had an appointment with them. Nurses the same. Let’s face it majority practices these days aren’t bulkbilling but that’s on Medicare and I don’t mind paying the gap payment when the services deserve it. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend kelvale.
Negative experience: Don't come here for your mental health, they don't take it seriously at all. Needed a medical exemption form filled out for my crippling depression and anxiety but was refused by the same doctor I've seen about it 3 times before because "depression and anxiety are not measurable like a physical ailment" basically implying I could be faking it. Was given the same prescription meds and sent on my way, basically the least amount of effort necessary to get me out the door. Along with this experience and the blank wordless gaze you're greeted with by reception, it's safe to say I'm never coming back here again.
Fantastic experience: Great dr and great services
Fantastic experience: Great service, especially from the handsome young male receptionist
Negative experience: Do not waste your time or money here. Absolutely shocking.
Negative experience: Husband tried to have a life saving procedure done but got rescheduled three times. In the end I told him to go elsewhere. Very disappointing.
Negative experience: Needed a minor medical procedure done in clinic. Standard first consent, got stuffed around with pathology and now every appointment for said procedure has had to be rebooked because the doctor has other commitments. Its happened 3 times now. What should have been a 4-6 week process has now gone on for 3 months, not happy.
Negative experience: Unfortunately money is the key driver for this practice, they have good doctors but not all bulk bill and the front office and reception feel like all ex staff of a Debt collection agency. If you forget to ask the doctor a question then bad luck you are told by reception book a paid appointment??
Negative experience: No communication between reception and doctors, waited there 1 hour for seeing a GP, and he refused to sign a document because of first consultation, reception didn’t know anything about procedures. Customer service is very poor not recommended
Negative experience: Never polite and always rushed. Spoken to like you are simple, one doctor told my partner she would have to remove her birthcontrol, the next week a doctor looked at the same scans and said it was fine? Need to work it out. Seek help elsewhere
Negative experience: I have today taken my 13yo granddaughter to kelvale and they no longer bulk bill kids even if they have health care cards. Cost after Medicare was over $40. Not very happy
Fantastic experience: Great receptionists and great doctors, they really show their concern, considering they're dealing with sick and sometimes wining patients all day long, I take my hat off to you all. Keep up the great work and keep those smiles coming.
Negative experience: Don't bother going here. Would like to get a health check up for my child. Tested for Covid and it's neg. Won't take booking in to get him check out. Only phone appointment. If doctors are scared to treat patient. Don't offer service. Been a patient here for a long time. Patient care has gone since the start of Covid. Beyond ridiculous. Would not recommend anyone to use their service here. Find somewhere else that actually care.
Negative experience: The wait was ages, we were due for 3:40 and we were there for an hour and a bit, dont recommend
Fantastic experience: Best doctors in Perth. Not a single doctor here that I would refuse to see. Would never dream of going to a different practice. Nurses and reception staff always accommodating and kind.
Negative experience: Went to Kelvale today have been going there since I was a child my Mum took me there I'm 55yrs d now and they are not going to bulk bill if your on a healthcare card only old age pension.so I said then if I'm sick ill stay at home and die because I can't afford to come here anymore. Its the Management that have changed the rules never letting me know until I got there today.NOT HAPPY AS I HAVE TO FIND A NEW DOCTOR,Hard when you have trust issue's.Thanks for been faithfully to your clientele Kelvale
Positive experience: Dr Adrian Jameson, soft speaking and do listens and spends the time with me explaining my problems. I highly recommend him.
Positive experience: Clean and friendly didn't wait long
Negative experience: Doctors are great, reception staff have continuously stuffed me around. Changed appointments without notifying me. Booked little ones 8 week check up and immunisations only to get there and they only booked the check up so had to wait another 2 weeks for her immunisations. They booked appointment for little one's 4 month immunisations a day before she turned 4 months, called me on the day of to cancel (had been booked over a month in advance).
Negative experience: Pathology is the worst experience I’ve ever had. I have very visible easy access veins and never have issues as i get multiple tests a year. The lady was rude and did not listen to my concerns when i said it didn’t feel right. Instead she tightened the tourniquet. She ended up pricking both arms, after wards i was bruised for 3 weeks with shooting pain down my arms! Then when i went back to tell her she said you should just go some where else and did not even apologize or have any sympathy to how she traumatize my body. Despite me telling her during the process.
Positive experience: Calling them is a nightmare, i guess they have only one (line)number which is busy most of the time and its hard to connect to them on phone.
Negative experience: Very poor greeting skills when answering incoming calls A polite "Good morning can I help?.." is a basic requisite. A friendly tone of voice and helpful attitude also helps when dealing with the public. My experience was very disappinting and my inquiry left unresolved. ...
Fantastic experience: I live near the city, though I will drive just to book in with Doctor Hults. He was the most considerate, understanding person and he just made everything so easy. I’ve found it so hard to find a good doctor that you trust in vulnerable moments. The only reason I wouldn’t recommend him to everyone, is because I’d then never get an appointment when I need it.
Negative experience: im aboriginal and im on the closing the gap programme and have been for 2 decades, i have seen 4 amazing drs there , colin stevens, he delivered me, peter lim , samual blaxall and robert perry, after 20 years of bulk billing ive been knocked back, most of the drs have left now as i have i will never ever set foot into that place agin and thet dr thonielle well theres a reason why anyone can get in to see him at any time, hopeless. kris baily
Negative experience: Attend the surgery today to get my 1st covid vac. Was given a form to fill in my reception that had the normal questions... And some were in reference to any anaphylaxis history with medication, I had stated yes in the past. Dr called me in for the vac... I tried to explain to him my history... He didn't even read the form... Just said your in the right aged group... And then jabbed me and told me to sit outside waiting room for 15mins...now you would think that these forms would be actually looked at by a Dr... You would also think that a Dr listened to what your saying to him.... Not to be treated like another number. Very unprofessional.
Fantastic experience: I'm writing a review in regards to Dr Adrian Jameson. I was recommended to see him to get a second opinion while waiting for an appointment to come in the mail as I was stressing a little bit. I'm glad I did as he took the time to explain every single bit of my referral letter which my other doctor didn't hens why I was stressing. There is a bit of a wait time but you can call prior to your appointment to see if you should come in later, the wait time is because he actually spends the time with his patients explaining things and going through everything very thoroughly.
Negative experience: Went in after very serious elbow injury that is stopping me from sleeping and everything. Asked for a script for some pain killers that will actually work while I sleep and was sent out with a script for over the counter ibuprofen which to be honest doesn't work. I feel they are trying to make money off the bulk billing consultation without actually helping anybody!
Negative experience: $95 for a 10 minutes consultation at 7:40 AM on Friday??? I feel like I got ripped off ..
Fantastic experience:
Fantastic experience: Admin and nursing staff are all excellent. Most doctors are great also. Experienced podiatrist and excellent Pathology. All good things come to those who wait...come prepared to wait, its worth it for the exceptional care.
Negative experience: Reception staff are terribly disinterested and appear unable to smile. First I was told I needed to wait whilst the staff transferred information from the form I filled in to the computer, as it was my 'job' to take the paperwork into the doctor. Not sure why it was my responsibility, or why they could not have brought it to me when it was done, but I suppose asking someone with a back injury to wait amused the staff. After a half an hour wait, I decided to leave. I went to the front desk to say I wanted to rebook the appointment. I was just stared at. No apology, no attempt to rebook the appointment, no smile - no words. Nothing. If the reception staff are that rude, how compassionate can the doctors be? I don't know. They weren't interested in me at all.
Negative experience: Reception staff were lovely but choose your doctor carefully felt very judged and an hour and a half wait is ridiculous for a five minute consultation!
Negative experience: Wouldn't recommend this place!! Spoke with 2 receptionists (women) and both have bad attitudes! 1 of them didn't no what a lipoma was, trying to make me feel stupid! While laughing, very unprofessional! Booked a consultation to have a lipoma removed and recommended me to a doctor who doesn't even surgically remove Lipomas. Referring me to dr Robert perry, who had no consideration and felt like I was just a number. waste of money and time!
Fantastic experience: I found Kelvale a few years ago and have never looked back. a fantastic caring and professional family clinic. I feel very secure in the fact they know my history and always keep a check on any health issues I have. I love the fact that they are an all in one clinic with a treatment room staffed with really lovely and caring nurses. A podiatrist/Dietitian and pathology. I find it so handy that they are open everyday and if needed I can phone for advise after-hours. The staff are fantastic. Welcomed with a smile at the front desk and treated by professional and caring Doctors and nurses. Fantastic work guys you show other clinics how its done.
Fantastic experience: Have been using this practice for years. My whole family has been seen by the nurses and doctors here and I wouldn't go anywhere else. Everyone from the front desk staff to the doctors themselves should be commended. They offer sincere, personalised care and always make time for us.
Negative experience: Front counter staff wonderful, wait time ok but pick your doctor wisely some need to improve their bedside manners,a bit of respect and common decency when speaking to people instead of putting them down, might go along way.
Positive experience: Bit expensive considering there is so many bulk billed places close by. The furniture is very dated, it's like something from the 80s.
Negative experience: Great for a consultation, doctors are good. However my poor rating comes from getting test results...requested over the phone initially but they rang and told me it was better to see the doctor. Went in for like literally 2 mins and got slugged $73
Fantastic experience: I've been seeing Dr Adrian Jameson for years now and could not recommend a better practise. Friendly staff and always prompt service.
Fantastic experience: i have been attending this centre for years and could not recommend a better bunch of professionals. i can ring and manage to get an appointment pretty well straight away and don't usually wait longer than 20 mins. Dr Lim and Dr Sri are my usual doctors and i am very happy with how thorough they both are.
Fantastic experience: GET YOUR AVIATION MEDICAL DONE HERE!!!! I had my Class 1 Renewed by Dr Perry. I was impressed with every aspect of my experience at Kelvale. Friendly staff, efficient, and most importantly to me, very very accommodating. Although I had booked well in advance, a roster change forced me to reschedule and Kelvale made it very easy with their online booking system and confirmation SMS/email. Thank you, i’ll be back next year!
Fantastic experience: I've been going to this Family Practice for years and even though I no longer live nearby, I'll still drive there when I need to. I've never had to wait longer than 10minutes. Super friendly doctors and nurses that are easy to talk to and were able to give me great advice at the start of my pregnancy journey. I'm terrified of needles and they always make sure I'm comfortable and must always be extra gentle because I never feel them (they even allow me to have a lolly from the lolly jar for being brave!!). There's no where else I'd rather go :)
Fantastic experience: Had to get a booster shot done, and can't recommend the clinic more highly. Absolutely lovely staff and efficient service. Yes, there was a bit of waiting time, but isn't that the case with 99% of doctor visits? Doctor who gave me the injection was fantastic - didn't waste time, which meant I didn't even get a chance to feel nervous about it. I'll definitely be back! If you don't want to pay for your visit, do your research and find a centre that does bulk billing, rather than complain about the cost at a centre that doesn't.
Fantastic experience: Always have been really good, very thorough and although sometimes there is a wait it is always worth it, I have been going to this surgery for 20 + years. That should say everything.
Negative experience: Dont bulk bill, $72.00 for a 5 minute visit.
